If you write or edit for a living, a style guide is always nearby. It doesn't matter if you've checked the same spelling or grammar issue once, twice or a hundred times, an AP Stylebook or a Chicago Manual is constantly within arm's reach. You can never be too sure about some style nugget.

You wouldn't expect one of the most simple and delicious desserts to prompt a reflexive grab at the AP book, but if your sweet tooth obscures your editor's eye, there's potential for a style snafu.

It seems the AP Stylebook doesn't do donuts. The editors there eat them, of course — they just don't spell "donuts." It's "doughnuts" as far as the AP is concerned, so if you're a newspaper or magazine writer bound to the AP book, eat donuts/doughnuts however you prefer, just don't spell them without the "ugh."

(Leave the "ugh" for the disgusted sigh over the AP's strict snack take.)
